Lenovo is a company which wants to offer a huge choice of smartphones in every class. This slightly reminds of Samsung’s strategy. However, today we’ll take a look at the capabilities of Lenovo A6000. This is a good looking phone with a low price, and probably, these are the main reasons for the great consumer interest. It comes at a price of about 160 euro, which is even better than the price of the popular mid-ranger Motorola Moto G, for example.

If you see the specs sheet and respectively, the price which comes with it, you’ll say that it’s a great phone, so we decided to test it and, of course, to show you every interesting part of it in a detailed review.

We expect a pleasant user interface with many preinstalled apps by Lenovo and a satisfying performance, thanks to the Qualcomm Snapdragon 410 CPU, in a relatively thin body. The display, camera, and battery also look interesting, so we’ll start our tests with great eagerness.

Design and construction

At first glance, Lenovo A6000 doesn’t look very impressive, but also, we can’t say anything bad for it. The phone has a low weight, just 128 g and a thin profile of 8 mm. These are good for А6000 because it’s a 5-inch mid-range model. Keep that in mind. As an example, its famous sibling Motorola Moto G (2014) is thicker (11.6 mm) and heavier (148 g) than A6000. Sorry, Moto, you are awesome, but a little curvy. After this quick comparison, you can be sure that Lenovo has put some thinking in the design of its phone.

Thanks to the combination of relatively thin body and slightly angled sides, we can consider the device to be a comfortable model for one-handed grip, but don’t expect to reach every point of the screen with your thumb. This is a 5-inch phone, so it’s impossible to do.

The components which are placed on the sides will hardly surprise anyone. On the right, there are the Volume and Power buttons, which protrude a bit and offer comfortable pressing. On the left, there is nothing, but on the bottom you can see a small hole for the built-in microphone. The 3.5mm audio jack and the microUSB port for charging are placed on the top.

In addition to the 5-inch screen, the front side is equipped with some typical components. There are three sensor buttons, which you can find in every Android device, and in our case they aren’t part of the screen. The front camera, earpiece, tiny Lenovo inscription, proximity sensor and an ambient light sensor are also here. The back includes the main camera, which is placed on the top left. Below, you can find the LED flash and the second microphone. There are also stereo speakers and one more Lenovo inscription, but this time a little bit bigger.

You can remove the back cover without any problem, and when you do that, you’ll see the battery. If you want to use the microSIM and microSD slots, which are placed above the battery, you have to remove it, but don’t worry, this is not a difficult task.

Display and sound

Lenovo A6000 has an HD IPS display with a capacitive multi-touch panel. It’s a 5-inch with a resolution of 1280 x 720 pixels, pixel density comes up to 294 ppi, and a pixel pitch of 0.0865 x 0.0865 mm. In order to be considered retina, you need to be observing the display from a distance no lower than 30 cm.

Display Comparison

If we assume a distance of 38cm (~15 in) between the human eye and the smartphone’s display to be optimal, then normal (20/20) vision would require a pixel density of at least 230ppi in order to interpret an image as perfectly detailed.

Conclusion

Lenovo A6000’s display has wide viewing angles, non-aggressive backlight, high contrast and covers 94% of the sRGB color gamut. The maximum brightness, color accuracy and resolution are average for this class.

Sound

The measured frequency amplitude profiling has an upsurge in the 3 kHz to 8 kHz range. The sound quality is OK.

Battery life

The capacity of the Lenovo A6000 battery is 2300 mAh, which sounds relatively good, but keep in mind that the phone comes with Qualcomm Snapdragon 410, which is popular with its energy efficiency, and when it comes to the other big energy consumer (the screen), things don’t look scary for the battery, because it’s just 5-inches with HD resolution. Of course, we’ll check how durable the battery actually is in our usual manner. The tests which we ran are talk time, web browsing with 3G and with Wi-Fi, gaming and watching movies, but first we have to tweak some settings – 120cd/m2 screen brightness, turned on Wi-Fi, turned off GPS, Bluetooth, and 3G (except our 3G browsing test, which requires 3G.).

In this test the screen doesn’t affect the battery life, since the proximity sensor turns it off during phone calls.

Software

Lenovo A6000 runs the Android 4.4 KitKat operating system and probably, we’ll also see 5.0 Lollipop in the near future. When it comes to the software of the phone, the most interesting part is its user interface, which offers some specific features. The first interesting thing is that all apps are placed on the Home screen and there isn’t an internal menu. In other words, something like in iOS. Also, they have a look, which is different from the classical one. You’ll find two themes and each of them offers absolutely different looks. There is a useful and good-looking drop-down, and if you slide your finger bottom up, you will see one more menu with some additional options.

Apps

It isn’t a first time we test a Lenovo smartphone, so we aren’t surprised from the great collection of pre-install apps. On the first page, there are three main applications – SYNCit for synchronization with cloud services or SD memory cards, SHAREit for sharing information between different devices, and Security for software protection. But that’s not all, of course. You’ll also find txtr ebooks for reading books, UC Browser which can be an alternative to Google Chrome, Evernote, file manager and a 30 day trial of ROUTE 66 navigation. There is even one folder with some games.

The Settings menu is different from the usual for Android 4.4 KitKat, and it even looks like the Lollipop Settings menu with a white background and colored icons.

Performance

A6000 runs on a Qualcomm chip – Snapdragon 410, which can be found in some other mid-range models, but it’s definitely a good choice for this class. It’s 64-bit, constructed through 28nm LP Process Technology. Snapdragon 410 is equipped with four Cortex-A53 cores, which work at a frequency of 1.2 GHz. The mobile chip also includes the Adreno 306 GPU and 1 GB of RAM. You can be sure that this is enough for smooth operation of the phone.

Qualcomm also claims that the processor is very energy efficient. You should know that this is absolutely true, if you have already seen the results from our battery tests above. We want to compare A6000 and its Snapdragon 410 with some competitive models from the same class, which work with MediaTek and other Qualcomm chips. After that, we’ll check what the temperatures are on the different parts of the phone after hours-long heavy gaming.

In this test, 3DMark’s Unlimited engine uses a fixed frame interval and renders exactly the same frames in every run on every device. The frames are rendered in 720p “offscreen” while the display is updated with small frame thumbnails every 100 frames to indicate progress.

Gaming

When you turn on the phone for the first time, you will find a folder with some games like Tap the Frog, Spider-Man, Asphalt 8 and more. Of course, there is no problem if you want to have a bigger collection because you have Google Play. However, the more important thing is that we didn’t have difficulties with the gaming, even when we tried to play heavier games. Sometimes, it may be possible to feel a little lag, but it won’t be a problem for the gaming experience.

Temperatures and comfort

Here, we measure the temperature on the phone’s back in three different areas, but first we did two hours of gaming. As usual, the highest temperature which we measured was in the camera area, but this isn’t a surprise because the processor is located there. It’s the highest, but it’s still relatively normal. The most important thing is that the area where you hold the phone has a temperature of just 33.1 C. As you can see in the image below, There isn’t anything to be concerned about when it comes to the temperatures in any part of the phone.

The back camera of the Lenovo A6000 has an 8mgpx sensor at 3264х2448 and an LED flash.

Resolution

Camera resolution in lph (lines per inch), in relation to the lens/matrix combination, is determined with the aid of an ISO 12233 chart.

The Lenovo A6000 camera achieves maximum resolution of 2080 lph in center-field, which is high for an 8mgpx sensor. In other words – the optics have been appropriately selected.

We add subjective, but sufficient awareness of resolution, image sharpness, color noise and chromatic aberrations to the test composition. The photo is taken in automatic mode by default.

Camera conclusion

Lenovo A6000’s camera has a high actual resolution (2080 lph is a great result for this class), accurate colors and a huge choice of settings. The relatively narrow dynamic range is a drawback.

Conclusion

As we expected, Lenovo A6000 has performed very well in almost all of our tests. It has a 5-inch HD IPS display, which covers 94% of the sRGB color gamut and also, we don’t detect any problematic pulsation of the light emissions (pulse-width modulation) on any brightness levels. The battery is very durable and achieved great results in our test, and the processor is also at the desired level.

We have some good words to say about the software. There is a good-looking interface with many pre-installed apps and games. Last but not least, there is a camera, which can take quality photos, as you can see above. The sound quality is average, and perhaps we expected something better from it. The phone has stereo speakers, though. Without any doubt, we can say that at the moment the phone is one of the best combination of price and capabilities on the market.
