LG already presented their new top smartphone – LG G4. We’re sure that many people want to know more about this device and, of course, we’ll give you detailed information with our upcoming review. But before that we want to show you the features of another LG phone, which can be found in the mid-range class. Its name is LG Spirit and this is very interesting and even engaging device.

At first glance, LG Spirit grabs our attention thanks to its slightly curved screen and body, but when you add Android 5.0 Lollipop with great user interface by LG, good performance of the Snapdragon 410, relatively durable battery, quality camera for its class and, of course, affordable price. Things sure look promising.

We are still testing the device, so you can expect to see our usual detailed test of the screen and camera, very soon, and be sure that we have many interesting results to share.

Design and construction

Last year, when we saw LG G3 for the first time and after its announcement, LG outed several models that have almost the same design as their flagship. Of course, this is good news for every LG fan who wants to buy a mid-range phone. LG Spirit has a plastic back cover, but it looks like a metal finish and respectively feels more premium. We’re testing a gold version of the phone and we want to say that it looks great and sometimes we forget that it is a mid-range phone.

When we talk about the back panel, it should be noted that you can find the volume and power buttons, as in almost every new LG phone. In addition to volume control, the buttons on the back can be used for a shortcut to the camera app or QuickMemo+. Also, on the back, there is a main camera, which is accompanied by an LED flash. On the bottom are placed the LG logo and the loudspeaker.

The front side is also sleek and stylish. It includes the usual components as the front camera, earpiece, proximity sensor, and an ambient light sensor, which you can see on the top while on the bottom is another LG logo. And one more specific thing about the front side, there are the classical-three-sensor-Android buttons, but this time they are so-called software buttons.

spirt

As we said earlier, the volume and power buttons are placed at the back, so don’t be surprised when you can’t feel anything on the sides. However, on the bottom are placed the microUSB port for charging and main built-in microphone. On the top, can be found 3.5 mm audio jack and another one built-in microphone that’s used for noise cancelation.

If you think that phones with curved screens looks good, but if you don’t have the spare money for LG G Flex2 or it’s just too much for you, probably LG Spirit is what you seek. It’s slightly curved and doesn’t look like a banana.

Under the hood

You can remove the back panel easily, thanks to a small hole, which is placed on bottom-right. The battery can also be removed and, in addition, under the cover you can also find a microSIM and microSD slots. It’s interesting that, one is beneath the other but, of course, this does not interfere with their normal usage.

Battery

LG Spirit’s battery is with capacity of 2100 mAh, which is not very impressive, but keep in mind that the phone comes with 4.7-inch HD display and Snapdragon 410, which is popular with its energy efficiency. We expect good results, so let’s start with the tests. As usual, we ran five different tests – talk time, web browsing with 3G and with Wi-Fi, gaming and video playback. Before that we tweaked some settings – 120cd/m2 screen brightness, turned on Wi-Fi, turned off GPS, Bluetooth, and 3G (except our 3G browsing test).

In this test the screen doesn’t affect the battery life, since the proximity sensor turns it off during phone calls.

Software

LG Spirit is a mid-range phone, but it has so many software features. The first thing that surprised us is the Android 5.0 Lollipop operating system. It’s still the latest version of Google’s mobile platform. Of course, Android 5.0 brings great optimization and pleasant appearance. Also, LG offers a multifunctional user interface, so the phone’s UI is one of its biggest positives. In addition, the icons have a different appearance from the classical ones.

Even when your screen is turned off you can check the date and time just with slightly swiping with a finger on the screen. The good old KnockON and Knock Code are also at your disposal, so you can make а specific combination to unlock the device.

You can use a battery saver mode when your juice drops below 15%.

Settings

The Settings menu looks pleasant and very useful. There are many functions and options. You can find four sections – Networks, Sound, Display and General. In the picture below you can see all available settings.

One-handed operation, Shortcut key, and Gestures

It’s a 4.7-inch phone, so probably, the one handed operation won’t be a problem, but LG offers some features in this regard. For example, you can slightly move the keyboard on the left or right.

The volume buttons, which are placed on the back, have another purpose. If you hold the top button, even when the screen is turn off, you will open QuickMemo+. The same operation but this time with the other button is a shortcut to the camera app.

Moreover, there is a special page with gestures, and most of them are very useful. You can flip the phone when you want to snooze or stop the alarm, pause the video or silence incoming calls.

It’s a menu for people with physical disabilities. Here you can see all the available options:

Apps

Last but not least, there are several pre-installed apps that you can find useful – file manager, QuickMemo + for taking notes, Polaris office for reading, creating and editing Word, Excel and PowerPoint documents and Weather application.

Performance

LG Spirit is equipped with Qualcomm Snapdragon 410, and currently, this is one of the best mobile chips for the mid-range smartphone. In addition to the smooth operation with the device, Snapdragon 410 is very energy efficient processor and our battery tests are here to back this up. The processor is 64-bit and includes four Cortex-A53 cores, which work at a frequency of 1.2 GHz. Adreno 306 is here to improve graphics performance and 1GB of RAM for seamless multitasking.

In order to find out how powerful the device is, we made a comparison with some other phones with similar prices.

Gaming

We have already tested phones with the same chipset, so we expect to see smooth and pleasant gaming. Even when we tried to play more demanding games like Real Racing 3 and EA SPORTS UFC we had no trouble.

Temperatures and comfort

We did two hours of gaming with LG Spirit, and after that we measured the temperatures in the different areas on the back cover. The results are great. The device was relatively cool in every point of its back. The hottest temperature, which we measured was in the camera area – 37.4 C (nothing disturbing). In the middle the temperature was 33.8 C, and in the area, where you hold the phone, we measured just 32.6 C. However, we can easily say that the heat is not a problem for LG Spirit.

Camera

LG Spirit has an 8MP main camera, which is common for this class. It offers an LED flash and autofocus. Very soon, you can expect our detailed camera tests, but currently we can show you some sample photos and videos, taken with the phone, a look at the menus, and a small comparison between LG Spirit and Motorola Moto G (2014). On the front side, there is a second 1MP camera. It comes with some useful features – taking photos with gestures and a bright screen to light things up when there’s no sufficient light.

Conclusion

There are many mid-range smartphones and some of them are good and there is no doubt that the LG Spirit is one of them. It has attractive and bit curved design, 4.7-inch HD IPS display, protected by Gorilla Glass 3, relatively durable battery, good performance thanks to the Snapdragon 410 SoC, and of course, Android 5.0 Lollipop and user interface with a handful of software features.

The main camera is just… good. However, we were pleasantly surprised by the features like taking selfies with gestures and voice, not to mention the Full HD video recording. The low temperatures after hours 3D gaming are also cons to consider. Unfortunately, though, there is only 8 GB of internal storage for your apps, but the handset has a microSD slot at your disposal. You can expect more information about the camera and display when we are ready with our tests. We will let you know when that happens.

Pros

  • 4.7-inch HD IPS screen with In-cell Touch technology and Gorilla Glass 3
  • High-class design with pleasant slightly curved screen
  • Android 5.0 Lollipop + User interface with many features
  • Relatively long battery life
  • Good performance – Snapdragon 410 and Adreno 306
  • Low temperatures after 3D gaming for several hours

Cons

  • Only 8GB storage
